Julia Seaborn

Julia was born in Austria of Ukrainian background.  She had a post-war education in semi-rural south-east England where she, together with her brother, had a happy childhood.

Julia has been a bit of a wanderer travelling to many countries but now lives in Adelaide, South Australia, where she has been settled for nearly 30 years.

At high school, Julia was a chess champion but her best moves may have been in later years when she played competition squash.

Julia likes to think she thrives on change. The number of jobs she's had is much like the number of countries she's visited – about 35 (possibly more) in all. These jobs have ranged from teacher’s aide, hand pollinating corn in fields, managing a playgroup at a childcare centre, TV ads, working in a funeral parlour, plus an assortment of secretarial and administrative positions.

Julia adores her miniature poodle, Pippin. Together they compete in dog sports and she walks him once and sometimes twice a day.

She also enjoys gardening, reading and writing children’s stories.

Julia is happily married with one son, two stepsons, one stepdaughter and four grandchildren.

Her goal is to write a series of children’s books and, to have an optimistic view on life that “the glass is half full, not half empty”.

Julia Seaborn Author Interview

Q. PIPPIN'S Country Adventure follows an energetic poodle on an adventure that teaches readers about animals and practices counting. What inspired you to create a story about Pippin?

The inspiration for "Pippin's Country Adventure" comes from my experience living on a rural property. The time has special memories and it was then that Pippin, my miniature poodle, came into my life.

Q.  Did you originally plan to combine several educational elements in the story or did that happen organically while creating the book?

Yes, this was part of my original concept for the book.

Q.  Are there any scenes in the book that are directly inspired by things Pippin's done in real life?

Yes, we had blue tongue lizards, willie wagtails, snakes and his real life sheepdog friend is Hamish. Although some characters are real, most of the book is fictional.

Q.  What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

The second in this series is called "Pippin Moves to the City" and will be available by the end of 2021. This book is entirely fictional.

Julia Seaborn Author Interview

Q. BUTTERBALL Goes to the Beach is an educational children’s picture book about a dog who explores the beach. What was the inspiration for the setup to this delightful book?

I’ve always enjoyed the beach environment and am fascinated by the range of different creatures that live in this setting. I thought it would be nice for children to read about a small dog meeting these creatures.

Q. Do you have a dog or poodle of your own? Did you put any of their traits into the book?

Yes, I do have a miniature poodle, we live by the beach and he is a very inquisitive little dog.

Q.  I enjoyed the educational material sprinkled throughout the book. What do you hope readers take away from this book?

I hope young children who share this book with an adult will have a better understanding of the different creatures that live in the marine environment. This book also might help them with numbers and counting.

Q.  What is the next book that you are working on and when will it be available?

Yes, I do have further plans for another book which should be published within the next 6-12mths. I have yet to decide whether it will be another book about Butterball or another canine character.
